It all started when…

My son’s first birthday came around and I knew that I wanted to make his cake and make it special to represent him, even though he was only turning one. The weird thing is that at that time, nearly 22 yrs. ago, I had no idea that creating his birthday cake would lead me to a place where I made a living creating cakes for others, but here I am and this is how it all came about.

In 2009 I found myself divorced with 2 children to care for and I had not worked outside of the the home for the past 11 yrs. and I was a homeschooling mom. Because I wanted to continue to homeschool, I looked for ways to generate income that would allow me to continue to do just that. In June of 2009, I took up driving a school bus and while the job provided a great need of insurance and some income, it wasn’t enough for a family of 3 to live off of.

Not knowing what to do, a friend suggested that I make my cakes and sell them. I didn’t think anyone would be interested in buying my cakes, but I made a few samples and placed them on Facebook which was becoming very popular at the time. Wow, my cakes sold and orders began to come in from friends, family and soon even from people that I didn’t know.

Before I knew it, I had a fully operational home based licensed bakery and so I was driving the bus in the morning and afternoons, baking cakes and homeschooling my children in between and boy was I busy and tired.

Soon my children finished school and when it was time for my youngest to head off to college, I knew the time was right for me to take the leap of faith and move my business out of my home into a brick and mortar storefront.

I had since remarried and luckily I have a very supportive husband who has been my biggest fan and encouragement every step of the way and he too agreed that the timing was right.

That storefront opened in November of 2017 and since then, I’ve been featured several times on Virginia’s WSLS 10, Daytime Blue Ridge , in February 2019 I was featured as a small business success story By Christy Wright, the founder of Business Boutique for women, with Dave Ramsey Solutions. The business boutique can be found here and in March of 2019, Cakes Your Way & The Coffee Cafe was named 2018 Small Business of The Year by The Alleghany Highlands Chamber of Commerce.

Big things can happen in the lives of those who don’t feel they have much to offer, I became what I call an accidental entrepreneur, I was someone who took the resources and skills that I had and I put them to work as a means for me to help provide for my family while adding value to the lives of others.

This has not always been an easy journey, but it has certainly been one worth taking.

Thanks for taking the time to read my story!

I look forward to serving you,
